Schools For Children With Special Needs

Swindon has a well-defined policy on special educational needs. This was developed after wide consultation. The aim is to move in a practical way towards including children with special educational needs in mainstream schools, wherever this is appropriate and possible.

There are a number of special units attached to mainstream schools that support children with more severe needs whilst integrating them as far as possible into mainstream classes.

Details Of Schools

Within the Borough of Swindon there are six special schools that are attended by over 400 pupils with ages ranging from three to 19 years-of-age.

Swindon has no residential special schools. In exceptional cases (where special educational needs cannot be met locally) children can sometimes be placed in a special school outside the borough. However, wherever possible, provision is made within one of the local special schools.

New Learning Facility

Threre are also plans to open a new special school for children with severe learning difficulties on the new secondary school site planned for the northern expansion of Swindon.
